Abstract

A regency capital serves as the center of government and socio-economic activities, resulting in high mobility levels that require an effective transportation system to support community movement. Mode choice preference is not solely determined by the availability of physical infrastructure, but also by users’ perceptions of service attributes. This study aims to model transportation mode choice preferences in Makale, Tana Toraja Regency, by considering safety performance, service availability performance, fare performance, and service quality performance. A quantitative approach was employed using primary data collected through questionnaires distributed to 300 respondents, consisting of users of public minibus (angkot), conventional motorcycle taxis, and online transportation services. The analysis was conducted using multinomial logistic regression with online transportation set as the reference category. The results indicate that the model is simultaneously significant (Chi-Square = 173.553; p < 0.001) with a Nagelkerke R-Square value of 0.494, meaning that the model explains 49.4% of the variation in mode choice preference. Safety performance and fare performance significantly influence mode differentiation, while service quality performance does not show a significant effect. Online transportation demonstrates competitive advantages in safety and service accessibility, whereas public minibus services remain attractive in terms of fare affordability. These findings indicate that safety and economic factors are the primary determinants of transportation mode choice preference in non-metropolitan areas.
