Abstract

This study explores the spiritual meanings, cultural values, and ecological relationships embedded in the Tari Ngagah Harimau (The Dance of Taming the Tiger) as a form of cultural expression among the people of Pulau Tengah. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through a case study method, data were collected via in-depth interviews and participatory observation involving dancers and students of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The findings reveal that Tari Ngagah Harimau is more than a mere artistic performance; it is rich with symbolism representing courage, resilience, and reverence toward ancestors and nature. The dance incorporates spiritual rituals such as bayar bangun and symbolic movements that reflect a harmonious relationship between humans and their environment. Islamic perspectives on the dance vary; however, the majority of community members and PAI students believe that, with appropriate adaptations such as modest costumes and suitable musical accompaniment, the dance remains aligned with Islamic values. Furthermore, Tari Ngagah Harimau carries messages of environmental conservation and character education, positioning it as a relevant cultural medium for fostering spiritual, social, and ecological awareness among younger generations.
